What it is, and how it differs from bacteriostatic water

Bacteriostatic sodium chloride is sterile water with two things added: 0.9% sodium chloride (salt), which makes it isotonic, and benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, which allows repeated withdrawals from the vial.1 Bacteriostatic water has the preservative but no salt. That's the whole difference: bacteriostatic sodium chloride is the isotonic, salt-containing multi-dose diluent.

Common questions

Is this the same as bacteriostatic water?

No. Bacteriostatic sodium chloride contains 0.9% salt (isotonic); bacteriostatic water has no salt. Both use a benzyl alcohol preservative for multi-dose use.1 See our bac water guide.

Is it isotonic?

Yes. The 0.9% sodium chloride makes it isotonic as supplied, unlike bacteriostatic water which must be made approximately isotonic before use.1
